A New Colossus

A New Colossus

Unlike the giant, arrogant statue of ancient Greece,
Ours is a powerful woman holding a torch with a flame made of lightning.
Her name is the Mother of Refugees, Mother of Outcasts.
With her guiding light, she welcomes the world.
With her compassionate eyes, she commands all she sees.
“We don’t need the glory of empires and kingdoms past,” she says
Without saying even a word. “Give me your tired, your poor.
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.
The ones you see as trash, the left over and left behind.
Send me your homeless, the battered and beaten down.
My light will always be on to welcome them home.”

In response to this infuriating story, I wrote this paraphrase of the famous poem “The New Colossus”, which is inscribed in a plaque at the foot of the Statue of Liberty (my apologies to original poet Emma Lazarus).
